Front Hood Crest Removal?

As a followup to this thread on the Hood Crest Gasket, I tried to remove my hood crest today without success. Looking through the holes in the underside of the hood I see what look like 8 mm nuts, but when I put a socket on them, they just spin and don't come off.

I took a look at some pictures of the crest, part no. 996-559-211-01 in eBay listings, and the studs on the back of the crest aren't threaded, so the nuts must be speednuts. Since they're just spinning and not coming off with a socket, does anyone have a good suggestion on removing the crest without damaging it or the hood? I'm going to see if I can gently get a very small screwdriver under the nut and pry on it as I turn the socket. But I'd like to know if anyone else has a better idea that has worked for them.
