Sun-visor Replacement

Anybody have any idea's on replacing the plastic flip on the sunvisors?

Deserion 04-13-2019 08:25 PM

I bought a pair of visors from a Cayman. Pulled the mirror assembly out of each and did a direct swap, no wire cutting, soldering, or splicing.

Now I have functional mirror lights and no warning label on the mirror cover. :)

Do you have lighted or unlighted visors? What is the issue you are having? The flap can be repaired if that is no longer locking in the open position and the mirror section can also be replaced separate of the entire visor assembly.

What kind of ideas are you looking for? It's a visor.

There is a solution to fix it: https://rennlist.com/forums/boxster-and-boxster-s-986-forum/886944-how-i-fixed-my-floppy-boxster-sun-visor.html

However, when I had my Boxster, I just bought used replacements from a dismantler.

the complete assembly for the mirror - not the visor - the mirror and cover are available and are easy to slide in and replace. Just like Deserion described.

Removed mine....really don't miss them except for a few times a summer.....no issues.

Do the Cayman sun visors you used detach and allow you to push the sun visor over to the side window area? That's one thing I don't like about the 986 sun visor, not being able to move it to the side window.

They do, but they won't work on the Boxster since the mounting point is radically different. I went with those as mounting points aside the visor is identical to the Boxster, and they were easier to find in nice condition. Cheaper, too. I think I paid about $90 for the pair I used in mine, and less than that for another set for a friend's 996. Compared to the $130+ for a new mirror it was a no-brainer. :)

Yeah I misread your post, you only used the mirror part off the Cayman sun visor. It really is annoying Porsche made the sun visors the way they did on the 986. I would love to be able to move the sun visor to the side window at times.

I know right? Especially since it seems the 996 cabrio has it (I think).

Both of the light covers are broken.

You have to buy a mirror assembly, they basically pop out but there are some wires inside so needs some soldering to be done right. Easily to take off the sun visor and work on a table. Remove 3 hex bolts but carefully.

Used visors from a later 987/997 work just fine to scavenge the mirrors from. No soldering is required to remove the mirror assembly and swap it into the Boxster's visors. Once the assembly is released (two tabs along the bottom edge, use a plastic trim tool to release) the mirror can be removed and then the contact bars can be removed. Same process to install.

Any idea where I can buy them?

I replaced my broken, lighted sun visor mirrors with unlighted mirrors from Auto Atlanta. Significantly cheaper, installation is literally a snap.

I'm tempted to do the same thing. I have to think long and hard to remember the last time I used and needed a lighted mirror there. (I don't put makeup on while I'm driving at night)

I ordered mine from ************************************************** ** I think, I will check the invoice I use several vendors, was about $70 I think. I-had to cut the wires in mine, and all the procedures I read said you need to desolder or cut. So I cut her wires then solder them back together put some heat shrink on the connection to finish. You need to be careful with the bolts though.

We need someone to 3d print the visor light covers. Both of mine are broken. Anyone here have the skills and machine?

I had the same thing, both lids hanging off. There was a video online to remove and replace the mirror/light part but it was easier just getting a pair of new complete visors from a porsche/specialist breakers. I found mine on eBay. Easy swap.
