Seat memory assigned to key not working?

I have two original keys for the 2003 S. Finally wore out the first one - which was set several years ago to my seat memory settings. Switched to the other key and it recalls a different (previously saved) seat position every time. I've reprogrammed 1 and 2 using the original instructions, tried everything I could on the internet, and even made up a few combinations of key presses. Both 1 and 2 are programmed to my seat position and will return there if I press either one, just can't get the seat to stop moving when unlocked with the second key.

The owners manual says insert key, turn to on position, hold the key button and press 1 or 2. I've done both, held for 5 seconds, etc. No luck.

Any suggestions?
