Door pocket covers
 

I accidentally put a scratch across the flip-up door pocket cover. I guess it went thru the outer coating, I can see a little of the plastic underneath. Does anyone know how much they run or how easy they are to replace? 2000 Boxster S, graphite grey interior with full leather (I think).

You know, it's strange how quickly I've changed since owning a Boxster. I used to be a carefree guy, driving around an old '95 Silverado that might have a scuff mark here or there, but always got me where I needed to go.. But now, it's like owning fine china, small issues are irking me when find them on my Boxster. Oh well, welcome to the life!

I replaced my door bin lids with a set of painted ones because the lids kept on peeling because of sunscreen that got onto them. After making the dealer replace a set once, it happened again shortly after, so I decided to put this to bed by buying a set of arctic silver painted pocket covers. Dealer charges like $400 for the original set that has the thin layer of black rubber/plastic skin on it. I’ve had the painted covers on (paid $200 for them) for more than a year now, and they still look like brand new. No more worries of sunscreen damaging the plastic skin on the covers.

As for replacing them, that’s easy- no need to take off the entire door panel. Just lift the lid to the up position and use a large nail or paper clip to push the hinge pin in either direction a bit (at each hinge), and then use a needle-nosed plier to pull the pin out. Be careful with the spring that is connected to the rearward facing hinge, and disconnect if first from the hinge/lid before removing the lid. Then put it all back together the same way when installing the new lids. Takes 10 minutes tops to do both lids.

Nice lids! That looks like an interesting idea, perhaps I can get them to match the aluminum trim that's on the handbrake/stick. You said they were painted, is it like hard painted console plastic in feel/toughness?

Also, do you have a seller that you would recommend?

I got them from a guy named Simon at essentialstyling.com. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer. He's actually selling a set on fleabay right now. I got them for $200 w/shipping included in April of last year.

The quality is very good. Very durable, and has look/feel same as the painted center console I have in place.

I called the dealer and they're around $70 each.
Anyone know how to Refurbish them?
That damn rubberized coating is just a bad design.
Is there maybe an aftermarket Porsche specialist that would sell non rubber-coated ones new for not as much $$$?

So I read through these posts concerning the dreaded peeling door pocket lids. I was all prepared to take the upholstered leather approach and I bought my materials off of Ebay. I didn't feel comfortable applying the adhesive until I had completely removed the peeling outer layer on the door pocket lids. So with a little elbow grease I scrubbed the thin layer off the edges with a damp terry cloth.
The plastic underneath was coming out surprisingly clean. I read that it was possibly elements in sunscreen that was dissolving the outer coating on the lids but what I think it might be is the alcohol content in the sunscreen. I used rubbing alcohol to remove the remainder of the outer coating and I gotta say I'm tempted to leave them that way. They look pretty clean.

So before you run out and shell out some cash on new ones or potentially ruin them by trying to upholster them try just scrubbing the outer layer off with a little elbow grease and rubbing alcohol. Might be the cheapest solution of all. If you don't like it well, you have a clean surface to adhere your leather to.

The rubber coating started in 2000. Sometimes it bubbles. Guess you could remove it. Or, get the door storage lid from a 1997-1999.

You should look at RennTech, and do the padded armrest modification. It will make the armrests more comfortable, and if you mess up you have nothing to lose since you are already looking at replacing the armrest.
