Question Is a CPO Boxster S worth 4000$ more?

Here's the deal.

I can get a non CPO warranty 2000 Boxster S with 50 000 miles for 19 000$

I can also get a CPO warranty ( 2 years or 100 000 miles) 2000 Boxster S with 45 000 miles for 22 800$.

Both cars have similar options and are in very good condition.

Is the warranty really worth 4000$? It's supposed to be valid in all Porsche dealerships accross North America and I plan to import the car in Canada.

thanks!

I would have to say the warranty is worth it, but I only paid $1100 extra for it. It has already saved me at least $5k in repair costs in things that needed to be fixed due to the previous owners negligence. It is up to you through, you could just get a really good PPI.
Hope this Helps!

I just recently priced an extended warranty for my car, and it was about $3,200 for the most comprehensive plan with $0 deductible. It would cover the car for 4 years after the factory's.

I was told by the dealer where I bought my car that it costs them about 2k to CPO a car, so 4k seems excessive unless they had to do extra work to get the CPO on this car. It is a very comprehensive list of items required to get the CPO.

If you could afford a newer car that still has any factory warranty left, then you could buy an aftermarket comprehensive warranty that would cost you about 2k.

Mine was a CPO when I bought it. I had a pwr steering pump and hose and a driver window regulator all repaired under warranty. During that time I also had a rt rear wheel bearing and a left frt lower control arm that needed repairing and these items were not covered by CPO (it is NOT a bumper to bumper warranty).

Were the extra $$$ worth the savings in repairs? Probably not, but the thing that made the CPO attractive to me was that I was travelling 725 miles to buy my car and I had peace of mind that this one would be good since it passed their inspection. This was my first Porsche and I didn't know about this forum or PPIs, so the CPO was my "woobie".

If both cars were serviced at that dealership, you may want to look at their records and see what has been done (or not done) to them. That my give you an idea of what may be lurking around the corner.

Good luck with your purchase.

Is it worth $4K? No.

...and, as a general statement without knowing a lot of the details, the price on both cars sounds very good.

I wouldn't just because the mileage is pretty much past the point of where anything major should have shown up by now.

it's not a competitive price but not outrageous either, those aren't brand new cars.
An aftermarket warranty with Warranty Direct (one of the best) with bumper to bumper coverage was quoted to me at roughly $1K a year for a minimum of three years, that was back when my car had just gone over 30K miles and was about two years out of factory warranty. And obviously the more miles and years go by the more the price of the warranty goes up.
Also, the aftermarket warranty came with many more restrictions than what a CPO warranty would come with. I think Warranty Direct has/had at one point ceased covering RMS replacement entirely or decided not to cover certain 996 911 engines because so many have gone bad.

I would see if they would be willing to go 2 years full warranty and tack on another 2 years for the engine and drivetrain. Or a full 3 years, particularly if you plan to drive more than 7K miles a year. Call up warranty direct and see how long two years will run and weigh your options. If these guys are unwilling to work with you move on.

Thanks for all the quick replies!

I'd like to clarify something: these 2 cars are not at the same dealership.

It's not like one dealership told me it cost them 4000$ to CPO the car. In fact they told me it cost them about 1700$ to CPO the car.

It's just that another dealership has a great price on a 2000 Boxster S at 19 000$ but it's not CPO'd.

As for the aftermarket warranties, WarrantyDirect does not apply in Quebec.
A lot of aftermarket warranties you guys have in the USA don't apply in Quebec...

Jaques, can you get the other dealership to CPO the car...at a cost lower than the $4K?

No the other dealership isn't a Porsche dealership.

The dealer charged me $1500 for the CPO on a 2007.

But keep in mind that the CPO isn't just a warranty. The car has to meet certain standards (the oil will be changed, the tires will have a certain amount a tread left, etc...)

While not a big fan of Extended Warranties

the difference between the two cars isn't really $3800 assuming you see the records of the 45k being done and the CPO report. The 45k car is worth about $466 more in comparison because it has 15k until a ~$1400 service is needed where the 50k car has only 10k. So the 50k car has "used up" $1/3 of the $1400 or so the 60k service will cost and the 45k car has "used up" none.

So now we are down to a difference in "value cost" of $3800-466 or $3333. And if the 50k car was not CPOed, I'd recommend a Pre-Purchase Inspection at another $250-300. So now we are closer to $3000 difference.

There may be other subtle differences...brake pad thickness, tread depth, etc. Buy the non-CPOed car and the PPI may reveal more about when those things will need to be done while the CPO report should tell you the same for that car and serve as the PPI. Plus a CPO car has to meet minimum standards while the non-CPOed car may meet safety standards which may not be as tough.

I can't begin to guess your risk tolerance and thus how important the extended warranty is to you.

Kras, how much more warranty do you now have on your 2007 over the factor warranty of 4 years and 50,000 miles? Thanks.

An additional 2 years and up to 100k miles. For $1500 it was a no-brainer.

Dude that's a GREAT price. If it passes a PPI go for it! That car has a lot going for it,litronics, the exterior color, painted center console, matching handbrake & shiftknob.

Be weary of independent car dealership warranties, most are shady and won't repair your car with new OEM parts(Carmax for example).

^ I've got a CarMax warranty and they are great. There is no deductible, and they just take my car to the Porsche dealer and have them fix it. They even replaced my Porsche Radio, which is rare because most warranties don't cover electronics' like the radio.
