Turbo Twist Shimmy
It appears that a PO may have hit a pot hole real hard on the passenger side of my 2001 986S.
Since I've had the car, approaching 75mph results in a shake until moving up to a higher speed. When I put new tires on, the installer identified that these two wheels are a bit out of round and needed to be balanced a bit special. Question: is there good results with having a wheel guy true a turbo twist wheel or is it a 'good money after bad' situation? Thanks! |
I'd suggest taking it in for an estimate. The OE cheap cast wheels may not even be repairable - but at least you'd know.

The good wheel repair places will tell you if a wheel is bent or damaged beyond repair. I wrecked one of my front Lt. Alloy Carrera 18 inch wheels at VIR and it was beyond repair. I bought a used one from eBay that needed refinishing as well as truing. It was trued and refinished and is holding up well. It came out looking so good I had the other 3 wheels trued and refinished too. My car rides the smoothest it has ever been since I bought it in 2003. You should definitely find a good wheel repair shop and have it looked at. Some of the tire shops have relationships with good wheel repair facilities and may be able to help you find one.

I had a slightly bent front wheel too. I checked the local wheel straightening companies and they all wanted $125 or more to fix the bent wheel. I contacted Woody here on the forum and he sold and shipped me a good replacement wheel for a much better price! Drop him a PM.:)

Yeah, that's the strange thing - they don't appear damaged, just what the tire center found when balancing new tires. I brought the car up from Indiana and those roads are not great, so it makes sense (about potholes) :)
Thanks! |
Always best to observe unknown wheels spinning on a wheel balancer without tires to see how out of balance the wheel is. This way you know if it's the wheel or the tire that needs attention.

IMHO, you should get a Wheel PPI before buying used wheels. |
i have nothing to add to this thread, but saw the title and thought you were starting a new dance craze.

Find a high quality wheel repair service and they can certainly do the job. This link has photos and even a video. Oh, and I cracked the oil pan too. That was a BIG hole. http://986forum.com/forums/553604-post920.html |
