What is the purpose of the foam trays in the vert top well? Sound deadening or water resistance or???

Id like to remove them on my mostly track car but i do drive to track in rain etc.

It funnels the water into the drain hole. Without them the water will flow into the floor pans. The water will collect and ruin your immobilizer under the driver's seat.
