Hi,

It is referred to as a LeMans Ignition , and was intended to facilitate starting the car and engaging 1st gear at the same time in what has come to be known as a LeMans Start.

But, it was first used in a Porsche-designed Auto Union entry in the 1937 Vanderbilt Cup Race at Roosevelt Raceway, which incidentally won the race.

It reappeared on Porsche's 1st LeMans entry in 1951 (they didn't win LeMans outright until 1970)...

Happy Motoring!... Jim'99

What's funny is I was told that while camping at Le Mans, I guess around 95-96 or so! Didn't have a Porsche, drove all the way in a Caterham! Awesome trip, most of the cirsuit is public road that you can race (err drive) the day before.
