Lowering my Boxster
Good morning all in the forum,
Being new to the Porsche world I just bought a 2001 Boxster S and so far I am very pleased with the little vehicle. The previous owner must have been quite a bit younger than me because the car was littered with carbon fiber look-a-like tapes and has been lowered quite a bit. Now I would like to raise the car back to standard and not being a trained auto mechanic I would still like to do it myself. How much hardware is needed for this? Is it only the struts and springs or does it take more than that? Best regards |
depending on what he used, you may just be able to put oem springs back on it. If he went to coilovers or shorter struts, then you'd need springs and struts.
|
I would suggest you remove one front and rear wheel and take pics of the suspension . Post the pics here and suggestions can be made on how to correct . Without a baseline for what you have everyone will be guessing on a solution .

Important points.
Have the whole rear end off the ground. Do not lower car without aluminum braces back on. The rear is much more difficult than the front. The rears struts and springs can slip under the rear fender lips without removing the ball joint on the wheel housing (I believe that is the name). Will need alignment after. Unless you have a lift, I would recommend doing the front and paying to have the rears done. It's doable (Heck I did it) but it wasn't much fun. Second set of hands would certainly help. If you enjoy this stuff, go at it. I think the shop wanted 5hrs to do or $500-600 before alignment. |
Finally got the car back and while changing the engine oil i took pictures of the rear suspension. Can anyone tell from the pictures if it is a quick fix to just install OEM springs or if i need to change the struts as well?

that could be the oem strut, but if the setup has been run like this for a while, the strut is probably shot anyway.
|
You could get away with just replacing the springs. That said, how many miles are on the car? If it is around 80K, it's probably time to change the struts.

Did a little reading in the service manual and looked at the setup on the car. Turns out the car has the Sport suspension struts, red dot, and previous owner installed a H&R spring set and lowered it another inch. So now I need to find a set of OEM springs with the orange/brown colour code and i guess i would be back to the original setup.
The car has 97k miles on it so yes I would problably need to have a look at the struts as well. |
If you check out my YouTube channel, you can find videos that will walk you through the procedure of changing struts/springs.

With 97k on the car, I'd consider a complete suspension refresh if you plan on replacing the struts.
