B&M shifter install help!

i'm in the process of installing a B&M shifter into my 98 boxster, i have the shifter removed and the new one ready to install.
when removing the old shifter there is a white square plastic clip on the pivot ball. but the b&m unit is not supplied with this, the clip is not large enough to fit the new pivot ball, do i need the clip? it seems like there will be a lot of play if i cant get the square clip on the pivot ball.
i'm at step # 46 of the B&M intstallation sheet.

There is some play, but not much. That white plastic cover will not come off, and even if it did, it wouldn't fit the B&M ball. No worries - continue with installation.

I was able to get the plastic piece off, but like you said it wouldn't fit.

B&M kit

Isn't it a nice change from stock! I but one on my box about 6 months ago and it makes shifting really feel more positive. The stock throw was soooooo long.
