Jӓger4Smobile Broke
I know... I know... It's not a 986 but I am just looking for some sympathy. My 997 has a major engine problem. Jake Raby thinks it's a broken chain. I tend to agree. The cam cover on bank 1 is cracked (chain side) and all three cylinders on bank 1 have error codes. Sending the Jӓger4Smobile to Flat 6 Innovations for repair or reconstruction. Also looking for any donations if you feel the urge. :)
I got over 304,000 miles on the Jӓgermobile (my first Boxster) and I have a chain break on my 997 with less than 90,000... Really?? http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1533698213.jpg Thank goodness I still my 986 to drive. |
Dang, sorry to hear this!
All of the M96/M97 engines have faults but its hit or miss regarding lifespan. Fellow Forum member "littlet" also rebuilt his 997 engine at 95,000 miles due to low oil pressure and metal shavings in the oil filter. |
Sorry to hear. Hope the financial pain isn’t too bad.
|
Your sending it to maybe the best out there so the outcome will be spectacular . Will be interesting to see what the final diagnosis reveals .
|
Best of luck. Hope the J4S isn't down for a refill for too long.
|
I feel your pain as someone whose own 2003S 3.2 engine just crapped out, either because the rear timing chain ramp broke and caused the LN Single Row Pro to fail, or vice versa, at less than 78,000 miles with 35,000 miles on the single row pro. You are certainly the guy to do a long-term test of a Raby M97 build! Best of luck and please keep us posted!
|
I also had a 2000 ....3.2 motor that suffered low oil pressure at idle .I was lucky enough to get on of LN Engineering motor through the recent sale terms. I pray I have gotten a good motor as they only supply a 90 day warranty. And most of that was used by the company installing it.After replacing the clutch flywheel & bolts motor mounts expansion tank and all the hoses , gaskets ,Dip stick tube, replacing the cold air kit back to stock air box, belt,Fuel injectors , oil and coolant & flush and the cost of instillation. The cost has passed the 10k mark .

Sorry to hear that the Jager4S has taken ill...
Jake and his people do really good work! He saved my engine and I'm sure he can save yours too. While all mechanical things can fail, your engine will be a lot less likely to fail again when he gets through with it! |
Hopefully he can get to it in a timely fashion.
|
That sucks, wishing your car a quick recovery.
|
Thanks everyone. My car made it cross-country and was delivered to Flat 6 Innovations on Friday. Now I wait until they can investigate the issue.

Jake called me today... It's not a broken chain. Now he thinks it's an IMS bearing failure. It has him somewhat excited because it looks like a failure type he has not seen before. My 997 has the large IMS bearing and he has seen only two of these fail, and that was about ten years ago. Something caused the chain going to bank one to jump and crack the cam cover. Also all of bank one no longer fired (suspect chain jumped a tooth). There are metal fragments and shavings in the sump, filter, and stuck to the magnetic drain plug. I just signed authorization for them to remove the motor and inspect. He said he will be inspecting and studying that IMS bearing very closely.
The Jӓger4Smobile will go down in history as the 997 that lead the way large IMS bearing failures! |

IMS Bearing Failure
Update: Yep, it was an IMS Bearing failure. Parts of the bearing flowing in the oil. Oil pump locks-up, cam sprocket breaks.

Do you know the oil change history? And what yr is the J4S? How many miles did you put on?
Inquiring minds (along with someone who owns 2 987s) want to know. Is it too early to know if Jake can save the patient or did too much debris circulate thru the arteries? |
He answered the mileage question in his first post: less than 90K miles.
From the photo i think it's a 997.1. MY must be between 2005 and 2008 (for Germany). Regards, Markus |

Jake is investigating... He really wants to know what caused the failure. He mentioned today that it could have been a tensioner. I will let you know what he finds. |
Wow, so sorry that you’re dealing with this. What a bummer. It’s seemed that the consensus has been that 997s are immune to IMSB failures, except for those that have been heavily tracked. In fact, I remember a post where Jake made that statement, if I’m not mistaken. Sucks to be the one to change that! Again, so sorry!

I can be more than sympathetic as the owner of an 06 C4S (Tip). Had you looked at the cam deviation anytime in the recent past?
I do hope you are able to resolve this in a positive way. John |
