It’s a great comp for sure, but BaT sales don’t always pan out so we won’t ever know if it truly gets that kind of money. It makes me want to buy a hardtop before selling mine when the time comes!

BaT is a marketing machine - cars sold there are almost always over-priced.
Here is a compendium of actual sales prices. Recently, there has been a bump upwards in some 986 prices - but on average, 986's are no where near the $20K mark. Don't kid yourself... there were ton of 986 made compare to say, 987.2.

Maybe so but that was a really clean 2000 S first year nice options. Price seemed to but above average, but alot depends on local markets condition ect...

That may be the factory Aero kit bumper cover, side skirts and wing. But it is not the factory Aero kit trunk lid. The Aero kit trunk lid does not have the cutout for the third brake light. The factory Aero kit trunk lid is also made of fiberglass, not steel. So I would guess that all the Aero kit parts were put on after the fact and not from the factory.

I was shocked to see that price, especially with the kit. The mileage wasn't particularly low either. I think it was a freak occurrence though fun to watch. Not too far from where I live. Craigslist Boston usually see around 10-14k I believe.

I think they are going up... My 02S books on NADA for over 14k now. It was shy of 11k 2 yrs ago. Not to say there is some crazy investment reality or anything, but Porsches ALWAYS come around. With the air-cooled market going crazy, the first and second gen 986 and 996 are the next "classics" in line. To that, because many are getting to the point some real $$ needs to spent to catch up on maint etc the cars are being discarded for race cars or scrap/parts and the herd is thinning. A year ago Boxsters were a dime a dozen in my area. Lately there may be 3 or 4 avail at any one time in the region.

Prices may be coming up, but this doesn't count inflation and value of dollar. For example, I bought my Boxster in 2009 for (what I thought was a steal) $15,000 (as an FYI, it's an 01 that had about 32,000 mi then). I figure that with the TLC, upgrades and low mileage I've put on, if I could find the right buyer I *might* get $15,000 (not that I plan to sell). Sound like a pretty good deal, right?
But let's figure in adjusted dollars; according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index, prices in 2018 are 17.46% higher than prices in 2009. The dollar experienced an average inflation rate of 1.80% per year. In other words, $15,000 in 2009 is equivalent in purchasing power to $17,618.57 in 2018, a difference of $2,618.57 over 9 years. Now I suppose that I need to figure in "major repairs" (IMS upgrade, water pump, etc) and I'm quickly approaching $25,000 in adjusted dollars....still excluding regular maintenance costs. My point is that even if I were to sell and got the magical $15,000 I originally paid, I've still lost about $15,000. This is why I don't fixate on resale...price is subjective, and unless you flip almost immediately, you are going to lose money. Actually, I rather reject the term "lose money" as the way I see it, I just paid for a whole lot of fun. If you look at it that way, it's pretty cheap, and money well spent. :) |
MWS makes a great point even if you hate to think about it. Fact is most car purchases are a terrible investment. But I think like mws paying for fun.:D

Who the hell buys a Boxster and worries about the resale price going up? I bought this thing to drive and enjoy. I don't care if the prices reach the moon or fall onto the floor because I'm going to be buried in it!

Cars go through a progression from new car to used car to old car and, if they survive long enough, to collectibe or classic car. During the old car phase a lot of cars are weeded out because their maintenance or repair costs make them uneconomical to keep. 987s still seem to be in the used car phase while 986s have hit the old car phase. At some point either 986s are going to rise to the level of 987s or 987s are going to dip to the 986 price point. At some point they’re going to both be collectible. It hasn’t been that long since long-nose 911s were the least desired out of all the 911s. The 986s could become the most desired Boxsters.
