convertible top issue

I had a new top installed with the glass window in my 2002 s. Shortly after I got it back the top would not go up or down completely. The installer says it worked when I picked it up. It did once or twice. I have found that it will go up or down if you leave it sit for a few hours. It will cycle about 25% then stop. Go back and try later another 25% Eventually it will complete the cycle. My thought is the new top is stiffer and the old motor just does not have the power to complete the cycle. The switches all seem to work. The windows go down, parking brake works etc. I have it down now so I can drive it. I just can't raise it without several try's over along period of time. Anyone experience this, any advise.

So go back to basics....the top mechanism on these cars is not that complicated. Open the top and disconnect the pivot arms on each side for the top and the cover. Open and close your top manually to ensure that the top will travel the full range of motion when in full manual mode.

Inspect pivot arm ball sockets and add some lithium grease to the sockets and the track that the cover travels on.

Next thing to check is the cables that run from the motor to the top transmission on each side. Pull the end of the cable out and inspect for fraying.

The only things left are the transmissions and the motor. You can pull each transmission and look for a bad gear (missing tooth). The motor pretty much works or doesn't.
