Pressing out Motor Mount
 

For those of you that have pressed your motor mount yourself, what did you use? I have a hydraulic press but nothing big enough or the same diameter as the outer edge of the mount. If anyone has any photos of the setup they used, that would be helpful too. Thanks

I used a 3"rigid conduit coupler. And the whole thing was a pain in the 4$$.

Cutting it out seems to be the way to go. That's my plan if I ever get to doing mine.

I have a hydraulic press but cut it out. The whole center of mine was wobbly so I just pushed it out and then easily cut the outter rim. I did use the conduit coupler from the plumbing supply store that maytag mentions to press the new one in.

I cut it out, but I had to use a press to get the new one in. It takes about 1 minutes to press the old one out and the new one in with a good press. I would recommend finding someone that will let you use their press.

Ended up having someone press it for me.. Paid more than I wanted ($40.00), but was running out of time, and did not want to have the car parked for three days while I found someone to do it for $25!

It was a true PITA to take off-replace the mount. Mostly the replacing part. In hindsight, should have just bitten the bullet and removetd the two water hoses. Worst part was getting the mount aligned on the top two bolts. Took me forever. Definitely not for those w/low patience level!!

Ended up cutting it out as when I pulled it off the car the center FELL OUT. Obviously well torn and appears to have been for some time. Got the new one pressed in and installed today and what a difference. I can’t believe how smooth and quiet this car with 130k Miles is now. I’ve only owned it for about 500 so it’s still very new to me. Thanks for all the advice!

Autozone rents a free strut/suspension tool kit with the correct size round dies (3" and slightly larger than 3") to use with a small press to RnR the motor mount bushing.

These worked perfectly. The dies in the kit look like big sockets and are hardened steel. One fits the inside of the opening and the other holds the bracket on the edge of the mount. One was 3" OD and the other was slightly larger.

My press is the cheapie 6 ton HF unit, around $70, had a ridiculously short throw, so I modified it with 1.25 x 1.25 x .125" Angle iron cut to 10" lengths. I used one of the supplied legs of the press as a hole template.

It took longer to mod the press than to replace the bushing.

I did notice that on my '98 the original bushing was slightly different in shape with the new one, so take care to get it's hole orientation the right way round. I only have a photo of the old one. Mine had what appeared to be a line up mark in the casting which seems to have been correct.

With the new mount in the car, the clutch shuttering at take off in 1st gear is now gone and she shifts beautifully. Whew, I don't need a clutch! Not yet anyway.
