Problem resolved
 
So, for a few more short drives, the battery light came on, very faintly. Got a rebuilt Bosch alternator at O'Reilly's ($170+/-), got a new Gates serpentine belt to replace what might have been a 19 year old belt, and swapped it out. Problem solved, he said optimistically.
