Trunk lighting
Was trying to determine why the front trunk light was not functioning. Opened the rear trunk and the front trunk light came on. Any words of wisdom on this phenomenon. Thanks

Opening either trunk makes both illuminate. Your front latch switch is acting up or bad.

I second the acting up/bad front latch switch. Mine frunk light 8/10 won't fire up. A couple swats on the latch, and it illuminates.
Didn't know opening either end lit up the other, too. Interesting.

You can try spraying some wd40 in the latch area. Might is intermittent also decided not worth the headache to tear apart.

I did not know this. For winter storage, I have been leaving the frunk ajar with the bulb removed...have I been burning the trunk light for 6 months at a time? And should I be removing the trunk bulb as well?
Grrrrrr. This is something that should be on a sticker in big bold letters inside the frunk and trunk.

No, the lights shut off after a while. I've never checked to see how long, but they don't stay on indefinitely.

Don’t quote me, but I’m pretty sure I read in the owners manual that the light will go out after 30 minutes.

My problem with my 99 986 is that the front compartment light will not go on though the rear compartment will. Changed the bulb but can't figure out where the problem lies.

https://www.renntech.org/topic/20789-front-trunk-microswitch-replacement/Porsche updated the switch in the front trunk latch. Here’s a link to a procedure for swapping in the updated switch.
The price of the switch - part # 996-613-206-00 appears to have risen significantly since I replaced mine. It was only about $40 in the old days.

Alternatively, you can remove the front latch mechanism, lube up the switch, and reinstall. I just did this, takes less than an hour (mark your bolts before removing the latch, it makes realignment much easier).

How about the ajar lid control light on the dash?
Is it activated independently for rear or front?
The front never turns on when I pop front, but will illuminate with the rear popped.
