06 Boxster S vs. 07 Cayman
Took the Box in for an oil change and to take care of some TSB’s and they found an oil leak at oil pump. They replaced the seal – yikes – wish me luck. Got a brand new Cayman as a loner – is that cool or what?
This isn’t really a fair comparison, S vs. non S, just observations on differences between the 2 cars. Only option on the Cayman was the preferred package. 1. Performance gap sure did feel significant. The loss of 35 horses was obvious when trying to accelerate at speed to pass, making downshifting necessary. 2. Cabin noise was a real bother. The hatch brings the rear shocks inside and on rough roads you can definitely hear them working. On some really big bumps I think the hatch actually rattled. 3. It was good to spend some time on 18’s. The ride felt the same as my 19’s. 4. The Continentals on the Cayman didn’t have near the grip as the Pilot Sports on the Box. 5. While the standard interior on Porsches is way better then most other cars the upgrade to the special leather was worth the $2500 and the sport steering wheel is a must. 6. The shifter in the 5 speed Cayman was much more precise than the 6 speed in the Box; it felt like it was gated. 7. A lot more people commented on the Cayman than ever on the Box. Probably just because it’s new but it does have a sweet profile. |

Since I have a 2006 I am interested in the TSB's preformed. Can you tell us more? Did you have any clues about the oil pump leaking? THANKS! |

Interesting post; I haven't driven in one yet but the noise issue is unfortunate. You would think a coupe would be quieter than a ragtop.
Regarding the shifter, the smooth and precise feel of the 5 spd is one reasons we didn't elect to go with the 6spd--base car with PASM. The two 987S's with the 6spd that I've driven both had a notchy feel. They weren't bad by any means but they did feel different than the 5spd, again not as smooth an action. |
TSB's performed and oil pump seal
TSB:
W573 - This is the retrofitting studs for the engine carrier with caps. W572 - Rubber Buffer Draft. not sure what this is. When they got to the motor it was obvious there was oil coming from somewhere, turned out to be leaking between the oil pump and the block. They replaced the rubber o-ring and rubber gasket. Service guy said they never had seen it before – just my luck. Glad I took it in early for the oil change. |
I think I have an oil leak also. After I came home from a 4 hour trip, the next morning I had a couple drips underneath the Box. I haven't figured out where it came from....starting to get a little worried. I haven't seen anymore drips since then...what do you guys think?

I never had any oil make it to the floor of the garage. As sealed as the motors are I think there needs to be a fairly significant amount of leakage to make it the floor. Better have that checked out.
