Did you put the washer-looking spacer in between the bearing/cup and the shifter stub? I have Ben's shifter and it includes this - not sure if your kit does too. Ben used to have you use a penny as a spacer, now he includes a metal spacer for the same purpose. Again, not sure about your kit, that's all I can think of.

I did solve the problem, it was just me making the wrong assumptions. Shifter now has 0 lateral play and the "bolt rifle action feel" is back
