Desnorkeling: Sanity check

Hi all,

I finally decided to desnorkel my MY2000 Boxster S, but TBH the entire cup + tube (henceforth known simply as "the snorkel") seems to sit very firmly in place.

Given that the plastic of the snorkel and airbox is soon 20 years old I didn't want to apply more force than I felt appropriate but the snorkel was firmly in place, and to be honest, there isn't much wiggle-room to speak of in there so limited options forleverage.

Is there a trick to taking the snorkel out with less force?

Just wiggle and pull. Post desnorkle- be very careful when washing the car not to spray directly into the vent/intake. I've done it twice and had a real rough engine for a few minutes.

Yes. That. Give it a solid twist, torque, and pull.

I faced the same challenge. Twice. Then decided to be firm. Worked.

Alright, thanks everyone. I'll try harder. ;)

And...? It worked?

No. I pulled harder but it won’t budge. I don’t want to break anything. I fear someone has glue it in place or something.

There is basically no wiggleroom up-down and only a little to the side.

Unlikely it's glued. Push it as far left as you can. No? Push it as far right as you can.

You have to "want" it to come off.

Mine came out easily once I really forced it to the right and left. There was no up or down play. Once I tried a bit more force, it popped right off.

Aren't there screws to be removed first? :)

Afaik there’s just one screw?

No screws in the snorkel. There is one that holds the intake shroud in.

I just pulled mine today. Once you have the grille removed (one screw for that) there are no others. If you can put two hands on the end of the snorkel you are ready. As others have mentioned you have to wiggle left and right and pull very hard. The snorkel is very well made and durable and I doubt you will break it.

Way way back when I went to a larger throttle body I ended up re snorking to improve response......de snork was great with a 68mm but not so much for 74mm

Jgkram 06-17-2019 06:34 AM

Jaykay, what do mean by response was not so good with the larger throttle body? How did it manifest itself so that you could tell a difference?

Apologies,

Low rpm range 3000 to 4000: throttle response quantified by engine acceleration vs time; real road loads using 3rd fourth and fifth gear.

Snorkel conguration was changed and the effect measured with a stopwatch. I also found that the Porsche stock tune works better with intake changes (ie larger TB) as opposed to the aftermarket one I had. It worked great with a 68mm TB but not so good with a 74mm. One could also just feel the change in thrust as well.

I actually made my own snorkel to work with the 68mm TB way back so that I could just pull away from my 964 run group nemesis at 5000/fifth gear up the back straight at Mosport. I like to think that it made a bit of a difference anyway (rather than fuel load or my driving). Miss that stuff...
