Who has replaced the ignition switch with the key stuck in the ignition?
 

Thought my problem was the key fob. Now the key is stuck in the ignition. Did some research, try to move the wheels, that did not work. I am assuming it is ignition switch. How hard is that to R&R? Any help appreciated.

Well, I removed the old ignition switch. Key came right out. Ordered two from amazon. Will be here Tuesday. I am getting lots of experience fast on this thing.

I think over on pedros website there are diy instructions for changing switch. Sounds like you already have it covered though.

After a decade of ownership, I am still figuring things out. I'm a pretty handy person, but admittedly not a mechanic (so I still leave any big items to the dealer); the one thing I have discovered is these cars have, um, let's just say a lot of quirks. If this were just about any other car, I wouldn't tolerate the issues, but by now it's almost as much fun as driving. As a recovering engineer, when working on anything I find myself trying to understand the thinking of the designer, and even though I spent many years working for a German company, I still have plenty of those "head shaking" moments. As your ownership continues, the only advice I can give is not to get angry, just think of it as a puzzle...a challenge that has to be completed before you are rewarded with a drive. ;)

MWS, I agree. What I don’t understand is why they did not put the ignition switch face down, so both of the screws were more accessible? That would have made more sense.

Btw, on another note, I dropped a small screwdriver behind the fuse panel. Do I need to worry about it? I tried to fish it out with a magnet, but could not get it. I do not feel like removing the fuse panel if I don’t have to...but if I must I guess I will figure out a way.

I would...if for no other reason than not having to buy another screwdriver. ;). Besides, like I said, just see it as another challenge to complete before getting to go for a drive. Lol.

Has anyone removed the fuse panel? I did some research and it looks like a lot of people did it to replace the whole thing. I just need to get behind it to get the screwdriver out. Am I able to do that without dealing with the fuses and the wiring rat nest?

Can't help on the how, but probably definitely remove it could be shorting something if not now when driving could shift.

Yes, that is what I was thinking and why I think I need to remove it.

Removed the fuse panel cover and found the screw driver. Got that buttoned back up. Tomorrow I get the new ignition switch and hopefully can install it tomorrow night. Thanks again for everyone’s help.

Got the switch in the mail and an hour after work had it in and up and running. Works like a dream. Thank you everyone for your help.
