key fob will not lock and unlock doors

bought 02 Boxster S last fall..
previous owner had dead battery for many months which affected settings in the computer.
only problem I cannot resolve is the key/security system
cannot get key to lock and unlock doors and trunks.
is there a quick fix?
it was working until previous owner turned off car to replace battery.
what might be the reset process?

Are you sure that the battery in the remote (key fob) is not dead?

The car will stop listening for the remotes after about 5 days (the car turns this off to conserve power). After that you have to use the key (in the door) to get inside. Once you use the key to unlock the door you should be able to use the remote functions again.

As far as I know, the (car) battery going dead shouldn't mess up the computer's settings...

If there's a reset process I'm sure someone here will chime in...

My bet is that the battery in your remote (key fob) is dead.

Garage
Insert key into door, turn to unlock position and press unlock key on fob.

I've read that this also works in the ignition. I believe the procedure for that is to turn key to "on" for 5-10 seconds (don't start car), turn off and remove key, then press unlock on fob within 5 seconds.
Information in books and online is conflicting...

What they said. Insert key into door lock, turn towards front of car to unlock. Then try remote buttons.

Enjoy.
