Firestone Indy 500
My rear Bridgestone S04 pole position tires are shot. I see good reviews for the indy 500's. Does anyone here have any experience with them? Thanks

Yes
Lots of positive threads on these; Search is your friend.
Note that until the first week of July 2018, there is a mail-in rebate on a set of 4, making a good bargain even better. Thanks - DM |
Thanks. I have a problem making the search option work on this site.

Thanks Dave. I have a 4 on the way from tire rack.

I have had a set of these for the last 6 months. They have been great tires, handle well ( I regularly chase a group of air cooled 911's ) and seem to be pretty good in the rain.

spent the day at the track with them. forecast was for thunder, lightning, torrential rain, cats and dogs falling from the skies. so, i left the hard-worn nto1's with no sypes back in the trailer and took the street tires. bad decision. sun shone the whole time, and i added 7 seconds to my best time.
what i found is that they heated up way too quick, and totally lost their composure once hot. spent the day playing with pressures to see what worked. started at 34/36, went to 32/34, finished with 30/32. nothing really worked. they made me sad. |

It sucks to buy a new set of tires and find out they're not good, esp track tires. You can't wait to wear them out to get something new, but remember that $1K you're about to blow.

I tracked a '99 996 for several years. Not the exact same experience, but close enough to comment. Coming in off the track, you want to shoot for around 40PSI. Unless you are running in PCA Green group, these tires will suck. If you are blue or better, get something like a Bridgestone RE-71 or Hankook R-S4. They will handle track temps and be a lot more fun. |
thanks, i'll try that. fyi, these arent my track tires; they're my streets that i took to the track as i thought it was going to be wet. once my nt01's are done i'm hoping to move to r7's for track work.
we run a very technical track here and i'd been dropping pressure in an effort to get onto the side indicators; hucking the car back and forth and it still wasnt to the side markers even at 32/34. |
