2000 986 Door speaker question
Hi all,
I purchased a 2000 Boxster last summer with the dreaded anemic sound system. I have upgraded the head unit and front speakers this Spring, which is about a 1000 percent improvement over what I had. I am now looking to round it a little now. I do have the 3.5 speakers in the rear storage compartment- they exist, that is, but they are blown or just barely working. I am not sure I want to even bother with those. I was wondering- even though my Boxster does not currently have door speakers, I assumed (ok, hoped) that my door would have the same place for speakers as the cars w/ the upgraded sound system and door speakers. Questions are: 1. Does this space exist in my car? 2. Where is it? (I assume under the carpeted are of the door) 3. How big of a driver can I get in there? (hoping 5 1/4) 4. How big of pain is it for a DIY project of someone with medium DIY skills, without screwing up my door trim? Thanks for any guidance. I've actually done a fair amount of research short of pulling off the door trim, and I'm coming up relatively empty on the any specifics. |
Some info on the process here (french with English subtitles) https://youtu.be/00PcXAiQqA8

That is an excellent video. Also watch how to get the panels off very easy but becareful on the clips holding the plastic.
I just did a full upgrade HU, AMP, and 3 way components. I used a second set of nokia speaker boxes to cut down and hold 6.5 inch drivers. I used a pair of 6.5 inch adpator rings for a mitshibushi, black hot glue worked best as a bonding agent. |
Thanks guys. I had seen this video before, but I didn't see any reference to the year of the car and didn't want to assume it was the same.
Cunningr, you were able to fit 6.5's in the door? |
