brand new tires or old tires for autocross event??
 

Hi,

I joined my local PCA & have my first beginners autocross precision driving school scheduled this coming sunday. My car needs new tires, fronts are nearly due & rears are past due. I ordered new & they are scheduled to be installed saturday so everything seemed fine. Then I hear new tires need to break in which usually takes 500 miles, I did not know this.

What do you think? run with the old tires or new ones? or drive a different car?

Be a bit careful your first few laps, they should scrub in nicely. Much better off on new rubber than old all day long.

Use the new ones. And don't worry about them.

Use the new tires, especially if it's cold and wet. Walk the course before you drive it. Drawing a map may help you remember it. When driving, concentrate on staying on the proper side of the cones and don't worry about your speed. Speed will come later.

Go with the new. I autocrossed Bridgestone Comp 2 all season tires when brand new and they scrubbed in right away. They are fantastic all season tires. I got within 1 tenth of a second for best pax time of the day vs. a 911 Carrera 4s. I don’t plan to change them until May, then I use RE-11’s. RE71’s don’t come in my 17 wheel size for my 04 Boxster. Take it easy at first. Walk the course, look at the proper line. When you drive it comes at you fast. Get the course down, and speed will build. Don’t go all out, brakes are important too. Be smooth and get into the rhythm. Be careful with cold tires, they can let go quicker than warm or hot tires. Good luck!

Check to see if your car will be inspected before you get on track. If your tires are 'iffy' or out dated, they may not let you participate.

Go with the new tires.
