Air Vent Problem

The control mechanism on my airvent broke recently. Now when you move the control up and down the actual vent does not move. A small piece broke off that connects the mechanism to the actual vent (piece is just laying inside the vent now).

It looks like this could be fixed easily if I can get the front of the vent off so I can re-attach the piece. Does anyone know how to remove the front piece of the vent on a 987? I don't want to remove the entire vent, just the front so I can access the piece.

Has this happened to anyone else?
