Just over 2 years ago I had installed a set of Red Stuff front pads as part of a total brake job along with new rotors etc. About a year later my car developed a very loud annoying high pitched squeal at slow speeds when braking. I inspected the front pads several times looking for the culprit but to no avail.Fed up I ordered a different brand of pads ( no this is not a bash for Red Stuff) along with a new set of shims. Removing the pads today I could hardly tell they had been used, but I was determined to fix this problem.When removing the inside shim on the drivers side I noticed the smaller aluminum tube was completely off the shim, the screw was just sitting there trapped by the mechanism.I opened my new set of shims and was shocked to find that all the screws were loose enough to remove with my fingernail. I removed the screws and added some thread locker and tightened, finished the front brake job and quiet as a mouse. My best guess was that loose shim tube was resonating at a low speed and just vibrating....anyway it is repaired now. I just thought this would be good information to anyone starting a brake job...check the retaining screws on the shims.
