My cup holder project

They say you don't realize what you have until you don't have it. Well now that all I have is this shallow, weak and broken cup holder that's in the way of the shifter I realize...... I really need a better one.

It's been cold over here lately and a real hassle holding my coffee and driving. So after some thinking and some prototypes - I came up with this.

I designed the base to go around the velcro piece that connects to floor mat. It's got some room to move around as needed. Still going to adjust the design a little bit.

Pieces I had laser cut and then I tig welded them together.Once the floor mat is moved in place the magic happens.

Only the top piece is showing and it's really secure with the base plate under the mat! I find this way way better than the plastic ones between the seat that look out of place.

Now to get it powder coated!

That doesn't look bad. I use a couple of the Ultimate Cup holders and they work but in my mind not ideal. Better than the dash ones though.

good idea, well executed

Thanks guys, after some matte black powder coat it will blend in better with the carpet. I'll post a final version when I finish one.

Well done! Can you post a pict from outside of the car with the door open so I can see where it actually sits relative to the driver's seat?

Clever and very well executed! Looks high quality so it matches the car. Well done.

Just a thought...you might want to add a couple of pieces of Velcro to the bottom, just in case of hard braking. Wouldn't want to see your grande launch. :)

Looks good! The Ultimate cup holders are fine if you drink BIG drinks but fall short ( or rather tall) if you like your espresso allongé! You might consider inserts to compensate for the European/Québec (Canadian) market?

Exactly! But that's not an espresso allongé, but rather a tall latté!

I was browsing for a new dashcam the other day and ran into this and bought a set. From pictures it looked great and I could use this on my road trips. The dash cup holders are ok but create a problem with the AC vents when it’s hot and you’re using both of them.
I don’t have them yet so can’t really comment on quality. We shall see.

I made a few of these a while back for my other car but they work well in the 986S too.
I fabricated them from aluminum and powdercoated them satin black.

I hope you have better luck, but I got these and they are crap. First, it took a month to arrive, but the cup holder is very small and fails suddenly and unexpectedly...tossed it in the garbage after a week of frustration.
Glad it was only 15 bucks

Saw these advertised on Instagram....all of the comments were really negative....wondering what they are really like

The issue with the ones that slide between the seat and console is that they scratch everything up, slip depending on the weight of the drink, or come loose when you shift you weight in the seat. I tried to DIY one that slipped under the floormat similar to the ones posted above, but it was never very secure in my experience. I finally bought an Ultimate Cupholder and it's the best I have found for the 986.

+1 on Ultimate Cupholder. The best Boxster Accessory I have bought yet!
Looks like I will pass on the between-the-seat-cubby although the IG ad just about had me pushing "Buy now"

Speaking of cup holders, would the early 986/996 cup holder (side by side) fit the 2004 Boxster? Pelican has a retrofit kit, which looks like a better alternative than buying the $400 replacement part for the 2004.

piper6909 04-25-2019 02:02 PM

That's a great solution, Avior! You could even bring it to market!

My favorite cupholders of all time were ones like these:

I haven't tired them in my Boxster, but they worked great in my 87 Dodge Radier! They can be mounted various ways, but I just screwed them into the door cards. Damn I miss that Raider!

DWBOX2000 04-26-2019 07:12 AM

That retrofit from Pelican, how would it fit on a 200 Box? Where does it go?
