He was a home town hero raised in Riverside CA. My dad went to school with him and they used to run around in rat rods together for a while. Gurney was always faster

RIP as you go airborne one more time Dan.

Hey Topless,
Your dad wasn't Skip Hudson by any chance?
I grew up in Berdoo, not far from Riverside.

Nope, Bobby Hockett. He ran around with Bert Leithold and a few other well known hot rodders from the area in the late 40s early 50s. Once I came along he sold the model "A" rat rod and settled into an engineering job.

This is a story about Bert's car with pics that likely included my dads and Dan Gurney's. At some point in the mid 50s Dan made the switch to sports cars and was seen in the 356 Speedster in that pic below. The rest is history and he became one of the winningest drivers in the US.

Dan and Skip had matching speedsters and raced each other on local desert roads.

A copy of him in the 804 is pinned to the wall in my office. Those tires! My favorite era of motor racing. No big wings, but a couple of big other things squeezed into the cockpit!
