Trying to find a specific paint color?
I saw a video of a Porsche 928 that I loved the color of and wanted to paint my 1997 Boxster 986 (pictured below). Its a light blue and my Boxster is black...
Searching the interweb I managed to find a 928 color info that might be the one I'm looking for: 1980-1981* hellblau metallic light blue metallic gris bleu métallisé azzurro chiaro metallizzato J4 Is that enough info to get the proper paint spec? This is the video of the 928 with the color I'm trying to match. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BZkACYjKGY Also am I crazy to paint a black car light blue? http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/9861513608661.jpg |
I have used Automotive Touch Up Paint from PaintScratch - Order Pro Grade Paint - PaintScratch.com in the past and been very pleased with their products. I just used their search function for your 80 928 and they show four blues available. Two look to be in the ballpark. You can give the paint code numbers to your shop and they can match it. The light blue will look nice with your tan interior. Please post a pic after you have it finished.

A quality wrap may be easier, less expensive, and look just as good.

I wouldn't change the color of that car in a million years it looks beautiful.
|
If I remember my early 928 colors correctly, that is called "Light Blue Metallic".
But like Husker Boxster said, I'd sure wrap it before I'd paint it. |
I would also recommend a wrap, changing the paint color will knock a few grand off the value of the car.
|
Are most wraps done strictly to the exterior body? I've seen few videos on this process which is intrigueing. I've never seen them open doors to be able to see inside the jams. Maybe it all just depends on $$.

if you wish to paint your car to the exact color, you will have to provide the paint shop with the color code.
you can search for it here: https://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/colour_codes_porsche another link. https://www.expresspaint.com/automotivetouchup/pc/Porsche-Helios-Blue-Metallic-38p19053.htm |
Thanks very much for the advice. Meir, thanks for the links. I guess I need to do some more research. Frankly I don't know much about cars and this is actually my first vehicle at 50 years old (I've been living over seas for too long ;).... I have no idea what wrapping is but I'll look into it. I'm really enjoying this as a new hobby.
My mechanic actually specializes in painting cars and he's afraid I'll devalue the car by painting it something unique. But I'm not sure I'm worried about resale value. I just want to keep maintaining thing thing and enjoying my daily mountain drive into the city! |
