I was changing the oil today and noticed this in the rear axles. Is this normal? Or do the rubber boots in the rear axle need replaced? How much would it cost?

Yeah, they’re done. Had mine replaced a couple of years back; under $400 if I remember.
I could have done it at home, but I would have had to buy $100 worth of tools I didn’t own plus the parts and spend a whole weekend getting totally filthy and greasy. Didn’t appeal to me at all.
Dropped the car off at 7:30 a.m. and my indie had it done before noon.

You can certainly DIY. I have replaced the boots on 2 cars, one a tip and the other a 6 speed. The parts are cheap, it's mostly a labour intensive job. Be prepared to get dirty and make sure you have everything that you need before starting. You don't need to remove the complete axle, just the inner flange. However, if you do decide to remove the axles, it will be easier to work on.

Hmmm. What do I need in terms of tools?

I am in the process of replacing my inner cv joints. Outers cannot be replaced all new axle $$$$. I would say replace boots and also inner while you are in there asap!

buy the boot replacement kit...pelican I think. It has four boots, clamps and grease. It's a PIA by the way. A character building exercise.

socket set with extension bars. Allen or Torx socket for flange bolts, end nipper pliers or special clamp tool for the boot clamps. A c-clip pliers. Torque wrench.:)

and if you decide to remove the axle from the car and work on the bench, you will need a 32mm socket and a big ass torque wrench.
ho. and you will need to buy a new nut as well.
