Added cooling for a 2.7
Have read some 2.7 owners add an S oil cooler. Is this a simple mod? Is the oil cooler in front of the car, requiring an S front bumper cover?
Any other mods to add cooling to a 2.7? |
The larger S oil cooler is direct fit part.
Changing to a low temperature thermostat is also a worthwhile addition. As you suggested, the third Center radiator can also be added to a base car: Install 3rd Radiator & Coolant System Bleeding Instructions |
"Is the oil cooler in front of the car" ... no, it's in the engine bay. up front are the radiators.

It's a very easy swap tp do, really. Ot's right on top of the engine on the drivers side (USA) and has easy access. The engine uses an oil to water heat-exchanger not like you are thinking, and air to oil radiator.
S cooler on the left. http://986forum.com/forums/attachmen...-img_6249s.jpg Here is is right on top of the engine. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1349826477.jpg I hope this helps you understand what is involved. You will have to drain down the cooling system a bit to make the swap and then refill abnd bleed. |
Thanks folks
Yeah, thought the middle opening in the front was the oil cooler. Kinda dumb after thinking about it. But is the S oil cooler just a swap?
Any down side to a low temp thermostat? |
Yes.
No. ................................................. |
Just have a plastic bag or similar ready to slip under the old cooler after you pop it off. The fluid left in it can make a real mess. Just ask me how I know.

Am sold
Funny, I usually spend money on performance upgrades. Guess when you enter your 60’s, priorities change. I definitely like the idea of cooling down that motor.
Can I get a recommendation for the Oil cooler? A used OEM one on eBay, doesn’t look great. Aftermarket? I don’t track my car but I do get stuck in Bay Area traffic a lot and has been bloody hot summer/fall here. Also, a recommendation for a low temp thermostat. OEM or are there after market products available? How low temp should I go given I do not track the car? |
Use a new OEM oil cooler, used ones often prove to be problematic, which is why they were for sale in the first place.
Several people sell the 160 stat; LN Engineering, Whaler, MotorRad, etc. |
Sounds like sage advice
But do you mean buying the cooler from Porsche? A scary thought.
Great, I’ll go with LN engineering so my thermostat matches the new IMS bearing I got from them. |

Oil cooler replacement
Any opinions on the Behr coolers?
Does $220 sound about right for an OEM cooler? |
