IMS or something else?

Simple question...is IMS noise RPM dependent?

Was rear ended a couple of months ago.
Car was a write off.
Bought it back.
Replaced rear bumper cover, trunk lid, repaired trunk and straighten rear right frame rail. it had dropped about an inch. No visible engine or exhaust damage occurred.

Car was sitting without being started for about 10 days.
Lots of white smoke on start up but went away after a couple of minutes of driving.
This seems to happen any time the car sits for more than a week but never happens with regular driving so I have been ignoring it... :)

Now the new scary issue.
When coming off the highway doing about 120kph gearing down and breaking, I get what sounds like serious lifter tap or knock... however;
It is a consistent rapid tap tap tap.
At first I thought ims but it isn't rpm dependent.
When I put the clutch in and let the revs drop...it stays the same.
I tried revving the engine the second time it happened and saw no change in the tapping.
When I get almost to a stop, I goes away.
I have no loss of power or performance in any way.
I can drive for an hour with no issues.
This doesn't happen if I'm slowing down from say 70 or 80 kph.
I has happened 4 or 5 times now.
I'm almost 100% sure the tapping stayed consistent despite the speed travelled.

Is it possible that something is just loose and vibrating badly when I come off the highway? It hasn't happened enough for me to know if it's triggered when I start breaking or just gearing down or both.
The car has 185000 kms on it. 2001 S model.
Not sure where to start...

Here is a pic of the rear...you can see the damage was not that bad. I welded in the support the quite well after everything was straight.
