I don't have a lot of exposure to three chain motors. I've had three come through here and two I sold the motor without even getting it to run. The third had the most amount of sludge I've ever seen in a motor. I chock that up to a car that might have never had it's oil changed. That being said, most of the motors I deal with don't have clatter when they first start up after sitting a day or two. I have had some that the lifters stick a little at first after the car has been sitting for months. Mind you, these cars will sit for a minimum of two months after getting wrecked before the paperwork clears and they go to the insurance auction bidding block. Sorry if I'm giving you more reasons to worry but you may want to investigate more into the clatter you're hearing. It could be something as simple as switching to a different brand/weight of oil.
