Not the battery

OK, I checked out the battery. It seems fine, not leaking, and doesn't smell at all. No smell in the battery compartment at all.

What could be the source of a vinegar smell??

My .02 but I wouldn't be so quick to discount the battery. Sulphuric acid fumes smell somewhat like vinegar. Did you check the battery with the car running? I would hazard a guess that your alternator could be overcharging the battery while running at RPM, failing regulator? this can be tested. There is a small vent tube have you made sure it is installed correctly?
