I've never used an escrow company. Both times that I bought remotely, I paid in full and the car was released to the shipping company/driver. The driver/shipping company then confirmed to me when they had successfully picked up the car and it was on its way to me.

I also had an onsite PPI's done by another remote company so I knew that the cars existed and I confirmed the seller's identity prior to sending the funds. Everything worked out fine both times.
