It's Just A Number
The Jӓgermobile went over 300K miles today… Guess it’s time for an oil change.

That's awesome. This proves that proper maintenance can make your engine go a long way.

How cool is that!

That is simply amazing...well done. Couple of questions:
1) How is the car holding up overall? 2) Any recent pics? 3) How did you know when it was time to replace the IMS each time. |
Is that real?

With continued TLC (and a few parts), now you have to aim for the 1M mark.. :-) . |

Maybe you can use that new Mobil oil that only needs changing once a yr. (Ha) |

Here are pictures I just took 5 minutes ago: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1497320682.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1497320695.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1497320711.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1497320723.jpg I replaced the IMS bearing when I replaced the clutch. Last time I checked the bearing that was in the motor (by spinning it with my fingers), and it did not feel as smooth as a new bearing so I replaced it. |

Congrat's and very happy for you!

Wow... Didn't think I'd see a 986 with mileage this high. Showing this to my friend who has an S2000.
|
Ah...I remember when you hit 250k four years ago. I'm a bit ashamed that I've only logged 10k in that time. :)

My car has 99k on the clock and it burns about one quart per thousand miles, and according to what I have read here, this oil consumption is kind of normal (no smoke through the tail pipe and have clean plugs..) Regards! |
WOW!!!
Jager, your 986 looks amazing! Have you ever had it repainted? I don't see any paint imperfections or serious road rash, what's your secret? I can't wait to see what milestone you hit next, very impressive, and a great example of how proper maintenance affects longevity. |
What an impressive achievement!
I'm curious to know what your maintenance regimen has been, and what parts you've replaced either due to failure or preventatively other than the IMS. What about the AOS? Water pump? Have you had the timing chain guides replaced at any point? What oil/filter do you run, and how often are you changing it? How hard do you drive it? |
If I remember correctly, Pedro posted a pic of his speedo and odometer as he hit 150k miles. His speedo was at 150 mph.
So we need a pic of your speedo at 300mph to keep up with Pedro. Congrats. Keep it up. You are one of the stalwarts of the forum. |

I hand wash with soft water and keep a good coat of wax on it, especially the front. |

Thinking of buying a Boxster? I have over 255,000 miles on my 2001 Boxster and can easily say it’s the best car I have ever owned. Not only is it a blast to drive (my daily driver) it’s the only car I have owned that has not left me stranded. I enjoy working on cars almost as much as driving them so that helps in keeping the cost of Porsche ownership down. There are routine items like changing the oil/filter, air filter, wipers, fuel filter, plugs, fan belt, and tires that I have done a number of times, but here is a list of other maintenance items I have done to my Boxster over the years (these are not necessarily in order but close): Replaced windshield – Pro installed Replaced rag top (cracked rear plastic window – don’t operate the top in cold weather) – Replaced myself Replaced brakes and rotors – Myself Replaced the battery -Myself Replaced fuel pump (going bad) – Pro Replace Air Oil Separator – Pro Replaced the ignition switch -Pro Replaced water pump (leaking) – Myself Replace gas cap (seal cracked) – Myself Replaced Air Oil Separator again (DO NOT OVERFILL MOTOR WITH OIL) - Myself Replaced IMS Bearing, rear main seal, clutch, and the flywheel – Myself (210k miles) Replaced all O2 sensors – Myself Replaced front motor mount - Myself Replace mass air flow sensor (no issues, now I have a spare) - Myself Replaced all spark plug coils (no issues, preventative maintenance) - Myself Replaced the seals on the oil cooler (no issues, preventative maintenance) - Myself Replaced turn signal/cruise control switch group – Myself Replaced headlights (entire assembly) – The plastic lenses had serous road rash after 200,000 miles Replaced covers to the key fob remote controls - Myself Replaced hood and trunk lift struts – Myself Replaced the oil cooler and seals - Myself Replaced driver’s side window regulator and locking switch – Myself Replaced the front bumper (I hit a coyote) – Pro Replaced the secondary air injection system cut-off valve, vacuum reservoir, electric cut-off switch – Myself Replaced brake pads and rotors again @240k miles – myself Replaced the rear track control arms- myself Replaced the trailing arms - myself Replaced the rear struts and top mounts – myself Replaced IMS bearing at 243,000 miles with LNE bearing… Again. Replaced water pump 243,000 miles Replaced evaporator valves miles Replaced rear wheel bearings 245,000 miles Replaced both axles 245,000 miles Replaced front wheel bearings 250,000 miles Replaced catalytic converter (bank 2) 253,000 miles Replaced AOS again 259.600 miles My Boxster has the original motor, original muffler. No leaks and motor runs great. It's my daily driver, I have taken to the track once, cross country twice, but mostly to and from work. I do like to get on it at least once or twice a day... I love to hear 5000 to 6000 RPM out of the motor. |
Awesome. I also have a 01 base. Looking forward to the same mileage! Out of curiosity what was your build date and do you have single or double row IMS?
|
WooHoo!!!
your car looks great So much for the nay sayers that say our cars are a POS |

How are your camshaft deviation readings? Would you consider doing the chain guides yourself?

I would consider rebuilding the entire motor when it comes time. I have also considered getting another motor, while they are still available at reasonable prices. |
