Underdrive Pulley Install Help Needed - 986 Forum - The Community for Porsche Boxster & Cayman Owners

I am unable to tighten down the pulley to 37 ft lbs and then the additional 90 degree turn without the pulley spinning with the bolt.

I have tried using a strap wrench, putting the handbrake up with the car in 5th gear, and also using a small allen key to try to hold the pulley in place.

Any tips or ideas on how to prevent the pulley from spinning to allow me to properly torque it down would be great.

In the picture below, isn't the red knob connected to something you stick through the pulley and it lock it against the block? Also, use first gear instead of fifth, it will provide more resistance. I'm not an expert technician, so this may not be helpful. Hopefully someone can confirm or say this is wrong,

What brand of pulley, mine came with a counter holding tool, if your pulley has holes I can overnight you the tool? I think mine was RSS but I'm not sure. It comes with a tool with a handle and two bolts sticking out.

I think.you may be able to.put the car in high gear and that will hold the crank. Unsure if that is bad for the car or not though...

Wait, the pulley is keyed right? So the crank is turning along with the bolt? That shouldn't happen in 5th.

What UDP are you trying to install? Does it have any holes? I also have a spare RSS pulley wrench that might help. A little more detail will help us help you.

Yes, if by keyed you mean that there is a small hole to allow the pulley to seat properly. I was really surprised that it was spinning when I put the transmission in 5th. It was quite worrying that it was spinning. Do you think I could have caused any damage by spinning it? Its a 6 speed Boxster S.

I am installing a Tarret underdrive pulley that has holes. The spare RSS pulley wrench would be of great help, I hope it would work. If that RSS wrench wouldn't work, how should I proceed?

The RSS wrench is made for the RSS pulley. It's really only 2 bolts passed through a u-shaped flat bar. ( I don't have a picture handy). You could easily fabricate one with your UDP dimensions.

Use a lower gear to hold the motor still. 5th won't stop it.

I asked the same question. The crank still rotates with the car in gear because of the dual mass flywheel. It shouldn't matter first gear or 5th gear if the parking brake is on hard.

I had a buddy use my old belt to hold the pulley with the car in gear and parking brake on and it was sufficient to tighten the bolt.

the rss wrench works. I use to have a rss pulley on my old car. On my current boxster, i got a tarret udp. The hole size is way different but the rss wrench holds the pulley perfectly fine

When you have the rss wrench in hand you'll know what i'm referring to...
the rss wrench is 2 bolts. They are too small in size for the tarret so I put rubber caps on the 2 bolts to thicken the size and to prevent any scratch/damage to the tarret pulley

I put the tool on the pulley and then a short piece of 2x4 propped against the edge of the engine compartment. Car in neutral. Put on the socket and rotated the crank until the tool handle was firmly on the 2x4 which was on the engine compartment edge. Marked the bolt with a sharpie and then did the extra 90 degrees. Holding the tool to counterhold might work if you got a helper and slid a jack handle or something over it to give leverage.
