windstop

Just came back from vacation and I was placing my beach chair behind my passenger seat and I happen to notice I scratched the plastic windstop. It's a small scratch but if it's feasible I would like to replace it.
I have a few questions-

1. Has anyone ever placed a tint on the plastic windstop? If so, I would love to see some pics.

2. Where can i find just a replacement for the plastic windstop?

3. Does anyone know what the cost will be for a replacement?
A new windstop runs approx. $380. but I don't need any of the other parts.

Actually just the center windstop is about $150 or so at the Stealership

dude,
i actually took off my windstop! i did not like the plastic design. now my car has better aero dynamics and mute my girlfriend's whining.

the cons- have to wear a cap or use a lot of hair gel.

hey i tinted my windows and my windstop. one thing i did like, because i have the plastic window on the back, was it looked pretty cool looking into the back and seeing the tinted windstop. adds to the privacy from the back window and at night made the back plastic window dark..if you get what i mean.

the tints however on the plastic windstop did not hold up very well. bubbly around the edges, but i know that i did not take very good care of it, and it was in my trunk flying around at times. i did push out most of the bubbles and it looks okay, not the best of. i am thinking about taking it back and trying it again.

another idea i have is to spray paint it with a tint, that might work out. i think this is a good idea if it works.

the other thing that you could try depending on the size of the scratch is.....scratch remover on plastics. i used this stuff on a couple of things and worked out really good. i love this ****************.

Your car doesn't have better aerodynamics now--the air that the windstop stops is the air that's rushing into the cabin from behind. Without the windstop, that air is STILL swirling around the car and affecting your drag coefficient.

On a slightly different subject...

One of my mesh windscreens fell off and got cracked up a bit....No good anymore. Since having just one looks bad, I decided to remove both the windscreens, and just keep the center windstop. I have noticed no increase in wind velocity with this arrangement. Any one else tried this? They seem to be mostly aesthetic in my opinion....

sorry i don't own a wind tunnel to prove my point.

I have this cool poster circa 1998 sunset scene of a guy driving arctic silver Boxster at the Pacific coast highway ..i have it frame and on my bedroom wall next to my nude lady.anyway the Boxster had no mesh and windstop.

tqtran 07-06-2006 09:55 AM

The guy was probably driving only 20mph
Who needs a wind stop at that speed

KronixSpeed 07-06-2006 10:11 AM

i too am not a big fan of the windscreens, besides the fact that one flew off and hit a boxster in the face at a really high speed. n now i own one side. they just dont do it for me.

the car looks so nice open from the back. wind who cares about wind its a convertible.

deal

You mean to *attempt* to prove your point, right? ;)

Hey Porscheracer, i finally got around to getting the tint spray. i will post a pic. i'm going to tint the plastic windstop. not sure if you remember back in the day, guys and there civics used to black out the rear lights. well i'm thinking that this should work on the plastic windstop.
should match well with my light tints. not sure about matching your limo tints, but may look good light.

then i may consider doing the rear plastic window, but kinda scared to attempt.

My car audio guy said he tried to tint motorcycle wind screens, and he said it wont stick, so unless you get walmart cheap-o stuff to dork around with, I wouldnt do it

KronixSpeed 08-17-2006 02:39 PM

Hey, well it didn't work out as expected. the spray paint tint is actually high grade paint....works very good on rear back lights and things like that. things that aren't two sided. meaning that you can only see in from one side like a headlight.

our windscreens are flat plastic and transparent. so when i spray painted it, it was soooo hard to get an even coat. when you put it up to the light you can see how bad it looks. or i just suck at spray painting......was very hard, i did it twice. you can pretty much wash it off within 5 mins of spraying.

it didnt look so good. it's back to normal, because i'm not wasting my money on any more of that ****************...... small little can finished $20.

i'll have to find another solution.

boggtown 08-17-2006 02:51 PM

Have you tried dying the plastic? Maybe that might work.

vouvoune 08-17-2006 03:59 PM

Frankly, I don;t feel much of a difference with or without it. I bought one because I thought the wind was annoying since I have long hair but it really doesn/t change much. Take it off and give it a try...

Perfectlap 08-17-2006 04:49 PM

I tried tinting mine in amber like my biking oakleys. Looked nice and cut down
on the haze.
then I Took one trip on the superspeedway at about 120 and the thing blew
right off the windscreen and in the direction of the car I'd just passed. :o

Hi Kronix

Rather than use a tint spray, try and get some black paint and thin it down and apply it with a spray gun.

You'll get a much better finish as the air going through a spray gun will deliver a smoother and more consistent combination of air and paint than a can.

Cheers.
