Will I need a Flywheel?
 

Might be a silly question but I have to ask since I am planning on having a new clutch put in very soon, at the recommendation of the shop that does my Boxster work. The estimate to do my clutch was $1700, but if I need a flywheel it goes up to $2800. Does that sound about right? And are there any indicators that might tell me what the percentage chance would be that I will need to have it replaced? I am planning on doing the IMS as well. 2001 Boxster S.

A couple of months ago I replaced my clutch (and the rear main seal) and decided to leave the flywheel alone, and after two weeks with a chattering clutch I removed again the transmission and replaced the flywheel, now it's smooth as silk again...

IMHO, replace the flywheel so you don't have to do it again

They are burning you on the flywheel, even Amazon sells them for less than $500.

Agreed, You can find the LUK DMF onlne for <$500 You would be crazy not to change it considering the work it takes to get at it. Really no extra labor if you are doing the IMS anyway.

I think the Porsche boxed unit may be $1000. I just installed a LUK on my 99 and it feels great.

There are several LUK Youtubes on how to test the DMF correctly. If your car has over 90K miles on the original it will be suspect.

Thanks guys for the fast responses. It is unanimous, new flywheel. I'll have to check and see if my indy will have a problem installing my parts. I'm thinking the $$ I save by purchasing the parts should almost pay for my IMS parts. My 01 has 74K on it.

A clutch kit is like $500-600 and it takes about 4-5 hrs so I don't see how they come up with $1700. Dealer is just over $100 per hour. Factory flywheel is like $1100 but a Luk can be had for about half.

You're getting bent over on the flywheel.
Sachs clutch kit is $300 (link), flywheel adds $400-$500 parts cost and takes an extra 10 minutes to do once you're in there, so the added $1100 is absurd. $600-$700 labor for an extra 10 minutes? :rolleyes:

BTW, when I did my clutch at 96k, the flywheel was fine. Maybe buy one yourself and have it on hand. Ask to see the flywheel when they get the trans out and decide for yourself. You can always sell the new flywheel for little to no loss if it's not needed.

Great suggestion. I think I'll get an estimate from the dealer as well. That was an indy's cost. I guess they don't resurface flywheels like they used to uh?

Because of its construction, dual mass flywheels cannot be resurfaced.

This is almost exactly the same quote my indie shop gave me for replacing clutch and flywheel. I haven't asked them if I can provide my own parts, but maybe I will now.

Don't be surprised if they want to requote if you bring you own parts. Shops make money of labor and parts, take one part of that out of the equation, and the other part will tend to go up accordingly.

How is the Luk different from OEM?

The name on the box and the price. The factory flywheel is often marked with their name, or even over stamped with the Sachs or Porsche name, but LUK makes the flywheel.
