Boxster Amp Issues

I have a 1998 Boxster, all original, and the stereo began to act up - right speakers would be fine, left channel would decrease in volume or cut out completely. If I turned up the volume, the left channel would re-engage at high volume, and then I could turn it back down with complete engagement.

If it shorted out again, I would repeat, or just keep the darned thing real loud.

Today, the amp I believe has given up the ghost, as the stereo is playing but the volume is very low. If you crank the deck volume up all the way, you can hear the signal, but at a very low volume.

Any thoughts as to deck versus amp problem? I would like to keep the car as original as possible.

Many thanks.
