how weird is it for carfax to have NO records

I just requested the carfax on an '01 base & there are no records until 090/2016 when the current dealer put the car up for sale. I mean absolutely nothing, zilch, not even original sale or registration. I've never seen it before is this common & not much to worry about or hinkey?

i've seen it a couple time...iirc both times the dealer reported wrong vin which showed up on carfax as no record except the reported one from current dealer

Not really surprising. Carfax are notoriously error prone.

Two years ago, my BMW 325i collided with a deer (the dear ran into the side of the car). $3500 in damage was repaired by insurance. When I sold the car over the holidays, no mention of the repair in the Carfax. Of course, I did disclose the repair to all of the interested parties and the ultimate buyer.

Here is what Consumer Reports found: Consumer Reports - Don't Rely on Car History Reports

Have you tried Autocheck?

I know they are pretty much all the same, but sometimes I have had luck using an alternate service which turned up more records.

Give it a try.

Carfax only reports what is reported to them. They don't do a "search" on the car

If the original sale and registration is not there this may be an imported car from Canada or Mexico. Many service stations do not report to Carfax but nearly all registrations and sales show up on there unless it was not in the US

The 10th character is incorrect. This character denotes where the Boxster was made. It should either be "S" for Stuttgart, Germany or "U" for Uusikaupunki, Finland.

All 2001 Boxsters were assembled in Finland, so I believe the correct VIN for this car is:

WP0CA298X1U620718

I've seen this happen before. I believe that the dealer records the VIN incorrectly, and then manages to get it the Carfax system somehow.

Just sayin'..........

Like TeamOxford says, the VIN you provided is incorrect.

Autocheck says there are 28 records for the corrected VIN.

Carfax says 30 records.

Did you pull the VIN off your registration, or take it from the option tag on the underside of the frunk lid (or VIN on the body tag under the clear window by the wipers)?

The VIN I have is from the dealer that has the car, I haven't seen it in person yet. I'm sure you must be right, I'll see about getting the right vin run.

Thanks, I would've never figured that out.
