I think you are looking at the wrong part; with that amount of piston to valve contact, you probably have bent valves.

Bent valves and defective hydraulic lifters. Also valve guides. conrods etc. have to be examined.

Cylinder wall is deeply scarred. New liner at minimum, so a complete tear down will be required. Along with the other noted problems.

yes the car had a broken spring on the #5 intake ,, I was able to pull all the pieces out of the cyl head so at least no nasty bits made it into the block .. this is a M96.24 engine out of an 03. I was under the impression that these engines were not re-sleevable ? I will do a search on that process Again thanks for the comments everyone ! |

Yes, the engines are re-sleeveable. Not sure why anyone would go to that expense, but it can be done. Least expensive alternative is to buy a cheap used engine and swap it in. |
The cheapest junkyard engine I can find is 7k ,, just debating my options at this point

there are cheaper options out there if you are looking for a junkyard engine. not saying it's the best option, just sharing more cost-effective options:

I'd offer $3,000 even for the eBay engine and pay a shop $2K to swap them. You should be back on the road for $5K.

I may have found a low mileage clean used engine for a decent price but its out of an 06 I have searched to see if it was compatible with the DME in the car but can not find anything definitive ,, can anyone confirm that the 06 would work ?? 2003 - 2008 all have the same DME so a 2006 should be a straight swap. From Pelican Parts: Boxster Tech Articles - Engine Swap Boxster & Cayman 2003-08 (2.7L / 2.9L / 3.2 S) The 2003 and later Boxster and Cayman cars can accept any 996/997 3.6 Carrera engine, and any Boxster or Cayman engine from 2003 and later. The best solution for more horsepower is to swap in a 3.6 or 3.8 996 or 997 engine. You can swap in any replacement engine of the same displacement from 2003-08 without having to remap the DME. (I.E. a 2003 Boxster 2.7L with a blown motor can accept a 2005 2.7L engine with no remapping needed). |
You can make it work but it takes someone who knows what they're doing to switch lots of parts from your dead engine onto the good motor. Be very careful. Something about locking the cams to remove the oil pumps or something like that. Hopefully JFP will chime in with the correct info. I don't know much about those later motors but I know it can be done
