Outer CV Join
Hi,
newbie on this forum, i'm looking for some advice :) I've an issue on rear leaft, CV join sounds dead. I'm looking for parts to repare it, it's quite easy to get Inner CV join (near motor), but I don't know where looking for outer join (near wheel). Do you have some advice ? Thanks ! |
Welcome and congratulations on your English ! Better than some of the 'natives' here :-).
Suggest you start with this link. Note the specific tools you will need and the oeticker clamps. Porsche Boxster CV Joints and Boot / Axle Replacement - 986 / 987 (1997-08) - Pelican Parts Technical Article This is a great way to practice your English. |
Ahah, basic english, fluent in development and computer, else...
Yeah I saw PelicanParts DIY, and the command parts page : Pelican Parts - European Automotive Parts and Accessories - Porsche • BMW • Mercedes • Volkswagen • Audi • Saab • Volvo • MINI But my mechanic said he'd already checked this page, and there's not the outer CV Join. I'm quite newbie in mechanics, so I don't know what do I search, only keywords Outer CV join x) Maybe I misunderstood something ?! |
Hi,
Yes i saw the page, and the detailed command page. My mechanic said CV joint inner and outer are different. Is Axle Joint corresponding to CV Joint ? And it's written : Axle Joint (Rear Right Inner, Rear Left Inner, Left or Right Rear Outer) Is it the same part that can be used left/right and inner/outer at rear ? I understood it was differents parts. I'm quite in trouble :( ps : ahah thx, school english, so not fluent as I'ld like ! |

What type and model year is your 986?
Maybe it's easier if you tell us the part number on the diagram. Same problem with english here. :D ;) Regards from Germany, Markus |
Pictures sent to my mechanic for precision, THX :)
I've a 986 S from 2004. |
Got reply : no id on picture, he sets a mark :

I don't believe you can actually buy a replacement outer CV joint
You can rebuild them, otherwise you have to replace the axle The inner CV can be replaced |
Cage and balls can be replaced on the outer CV joint.
If anything else is worn or broken you have to replace the whole axle or get a used one and build a new one with the best parts of both. Also there are cheap replacement axles available, but i wouldn't go for one because i live in Germany and we have the Autobahn where we on some passages can drive without speed limit. Because you have a 2004 car, make shure you get the right axles for your car. M 009/249 = 3.2 Litre / Tiptronic -> 986 332 024 11 M 009/480 = 3.2 Litre / 6 speed manual Regards, Markus |
Is the cage and balls for the outer CV a Porsche part, or aftermarket?
|
OK, need to check with my mechanic if replacing this part is mandatory.
For full axle replacement, what should be the cost of the entire part ? |
For Boxster parts in France, this source may help you ?
Rose Passion - Porsche Boxster 986 |
Yeah RP is very used in France for parts, but looking for better price x)
Rose Passion - P48433 - 98633202455 - DRIVE SHAFT - Porsche Boxster 986 2002 Boxster S 3.2 CABRIO MANUAL GEARBOX, 6 SPEED > REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY > UNIVERSAL COUPLING AND BELLOWS part is 700€, x2 if I repare rear. Is outer CV Joint the key word for research this part, or is there a better name ? Thx |
