Replaced fuel vent valve, now spewing gas when refueling.

Yesterday night I replaced my fuel tank vent valve due to hissing and issues with fueling. Today when I tried to fill it up the problem seems to have gotten worse, instead of just stopping after about two gallons of gas, the car is spewing gas back at me.

I'm in California so we have hooded gas fillers with two pressure relief holes, so much air pressure is building up that it's spewing the gas through the small vent holes on the hood in strong streams.

I'm not sure what went wrong here, both of the connectors to the valve were in place properly anyone have a similar problem?
