987s
I sold my 02s and bought a 987s. Love the car. Huge upgrades in many ways. So happy with it.

Looks, I like the look much better. Old one looked OLD. Sorry but the way I felt about it.
Ride quality Interior quality, far ahead, the 986 interior sucked in comparison. 987S interior is like a 911 Rims are much nicer, I have the 19s. I hated the twisty wheels on my 02. I did like the color of my old car and the way it handled, but this 987s is better in just about every way. Love the sleeker look |
Every generation gets better. I will drive this 987s for a few years then move up to a second gen 987s or 981s.
The 981s is what I want and will move too maybe next. |
No doubt the 987 is more refined....but having owned both, there is no doubt the 986 is much more 'raw'' which is part of the fun of the car. The 986 at times felt like it might just kill you. The 987, not so much. Both have their pros and cons.
As to looks, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. |

Yes, the 987.1 does have an improved interior in some aspects. Ingress/egress is smoother (for me at least), standard OBC, better cupholders, more lighting, tighter shifter, and has a touch more footroom.
Aside from that, the materials are worse than the 986. The base plastics (for the panels) are more brittle, the soft-touch rubberized paint comes off more readily, the HVAC controls get FUBAR'd easier, the leather isn't quite as nice, and the panels are harder to keep clean. Feels more Volkswagen-like than Porsche. That said, I do like both. Not like I'm going to turn down a spirited drive in a 987. :) |
Never once have I felt like, or had someone call my 986 a chick car. In fact, you could argue the less refined, more raw experience is just the opposite as compared to the newer cars. However, I too look forward to moving to a 987.2 and a 981 some day.

OP had nicely optioned and well kept 02S, but didn't mod it at all (no upgraded factory or aftermarket sideskirts or bumpers), had stock outdated wheels, dated amber side and tail lights, and plastic rear window. The 987, with glass rear window, updated interior, and 19"wheels would look more modern (although some people still dislike those lobster fork style factory wheels). Many people here as you can see updated the looks of their 986 Boxsters where they look better than the 987 IMO. Yes, the newer models always have incremental improvements (although I'm not sure I like the 718), but they aren't always enough to make people do the jump. I've had mine for 15 years, and don't look to jump to a newer used one every 3 years. I'd rather keep my current one that's treated me well and use it till it dies, and then get a different car (I'm most likely not going Boxster again), as I like a change every once in a while.

@Nine8six- I used to ride in college in a state where they don't require you to wear helmets. Thankfully, I never got into any accidents, but crazy now that I think about it. Glad you are ok and are recovering.

We're blessed that we're wired so that we don't remember those really bad things. I had four accidents in six years. Two I don't remember. Two I do - they just required screws in shoulders. I was 59 for the first. Do that stuff when you're young. There came a point for me where healing pain/time became unacceptable. My biggest hope is that one day the nerves below my knees will reconnect so I can feel the bottoms of my feet again. |

Sorry to hear about your accident Fred. Sounds like you are lucky to be alive. A highside at 100 mph is pretty serious. I too ride (Daytona 675) and have done my own highside's in the past. No fun that's for sure.

However you definitely seem to have different visual tastes then myself, the 987 rims look far too "functional" in my opinion, the old twists elicit way more emotion. Also as others have noted the interior of the 986 is that of the 911 so to say an interior is more 911 is quite odd. I like the interior look though on the 987 and the tail lights much better, but have heard of issues with interior quality. Nice to hear that the driving experience is better though! |
