Off-Road "Baja Boxster" Wheel Question
Hello All,
I hope all is well. Let me just start off by saying the 986 forum has been extremely helpful in my Boxster escapades so far, but I need the help of the community for a unique build. We recently bought the cheapest 986 in our area with plans to turn it into an off-road "trail" rig to take to the 2017 Easter Jeep Safari. The plan is to run all 149 miles of the white rim trail in our '99 2.5. The first major mod (besides a suspension lift) are a set of A/T tires. I really would like to run a 205/75 Grabber at2, but that would require a 15 in rim. Would a 15 inch work on a non S front and rear, or would I have to step up to a 16? Thanks all for your help in advance! |
The brakes are what restricts rim size. On a non-S the stock 16" rims are as small as you can go (to my knowledge). You can normally find a set of 16" rims for about $400.
Post some pictures when you finish, I would love to see a Baja 986! :cheers: |

I've also thought about building a Baja Boxster. I'm not sure much of any of the suspension control arms could handle that kind of abuse. You'd probably need to make longer ones for suspension travel anyway. I guaranty the rear subframe won't be able to handle any kind of abuse. Spec guys are always breaking them. You'll also need to install a six speed because I doubt the five speed will last very long with the strain of bigger tires.

Thanks for the support guys, It certainly will be interesting. The plans are tires, lift, skid plates, tire /MaxTrax rack, and maybe even a snorkel???

LN Engineering makes a very stout skidplate, I have one, in the back it mounts to the two frontmost bolts of the sheetmetal brace, and in the front it sandwiches between the shoulder of the two lower bolts that hold the engine mount on the engine side. The skid plate has slots there, and in the event of a hard strike it might slide up, don't know if that would change the clamping force of those bolts or not (if indeed it could move)
