MS, it is very easy to find one's identity from their liscense plate number. That is my only guess as to why some forum members black-out this info when posting pictures.

having worked in federal law enforcement I can tell you the drug capitol of the world is not Bogota or anywhere in South America for that matter. Perhaps at one time but no longer and its been like that for a long time now. Mexico today is the headquarters of the drug trade. Very large amounts (passenger planes minus the seats) of drugs are flown into Northern Mexico where they are off loaded and packed onto trucks headed into the U.S. through the south west border. Mexican gangs control the distrbution of drugs coming into all the major U.S. cities. Mexico may not yet be a grower and processor of drugs like the South American countries but Mexico still does the majority of the leg work, where the big money is. And of course we still consume well north of 75% of the worlds drugs even though we no longer control the majority of the world's wealth.

As far as the license plate, again having worked in law enforcement I can tell you don't want your license plate number on the internet. Motor vehicle information is very easy to obtain, There are car theft gangs who operate by spotting cars & noting the plate number. In Southern California and South Florida this must be very easy given the concentration of Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo etc.
these very well funded guys do a little on line research and appear at your home in the middle of the night to steal your baby often times using a tow truck to make it look like a repossesion and your neighbohrs feeling embarrased for you don't call the police. Sometimes they follow you home too. Enthusiast websites like this one are like a virtual menu for theifs. So don't post your small town name or license plate number.

Information that was only available to law enforcement is now easily accessible on the internet through paid 'subscribtion' services that corporate investigation companies like Kroll and Interfor have access to. And of course if its on the internet someone is hacking into it. :D

come on guys, knowing that your license plate is perfectly visible to the anyone else on the street when you drive your car, can't you wrap your brains around this - isn't blacking your plate out on line to avoid the small chance that someone might track you down and take your car, the same thing as saying i'm not going to go outside without a mask because someone might be hiding in a tree today with the intent of shooting all the naven johnsons on the planet (assume for a moment your name is naven johnson...) or saying i'm not going to the grocery store because a plane may fall from the sky into the store...

really, if you're that worried - park the car in a climate controlled personal showroom and make sure cameron and ferris don't the keys. and god forbid you ever go outside without taking baby steps, wearing your respiratory mask, sterile gloves and watching out for any falling planes, asteroids, random tree hiding snipers, car thiefs, aliens, gnomes, smurfs, etc. and, oh yeah, stay off the internet!

If it makes someone happy to blank out there plate, so be it... if they do not...again ..so be it.

I have travelled all over the world and the women in Colombia are tops in the world in appearance and attitude. They look like models and will wait on their man hand and foot. The car is registered in Bogota but I live in Cartagena de Indias. There is one other Porsche in my city. In Bogota there are more but it is not common to see one. When I drive around people yell out "Oye Porsche!!" when they see me. I cannot drive for more than 5 minutes without someone yelling at the car. Girls on the street yell out that they want to sit in it or go for a ride. Others roll down the window of the car they are in and make gestures at me every time I drive around. Not that I am Mr. Stud or anything like that, but this is a different culture than the US. When I drive a similar type of car in Canada (my long forgotten home country) no one gave it a second look. And no, I am not married. That would be like paying for sand on the beach.

Porsches are very rare in Bogota. There are some but it is unusual to see one. Very few fine european cars.

I have lived in Colombia for 2.5 years. I have NEVER ONE TIME seen drugs. I have never been offered drugs on the street. I have never met a drug dealer. When I walk down the street in Miami, NY or LA I am offered drugs for sale but that has never happened in Colombia.

But it is ok, I understand your stereotyping from the media and television. Most Colombians think that Americans own a tree that grows money so it is not like people do not stereotype here.

I do not live in Bogota by the way. The car is registered there which is why the plates say Bogota but I live on the coast.

When I was in Caracas, Venezuela for work not so long ago gas was like 0 cents a gallon!
THe problem there was parking. On certain days you weren't allowed to drive your car. License plates with an even numbered had to stay home
for a couple days a week. Some very pretty women over indeed there but not quiet like in Colombia from what I was told and they mentioned lots of plastic surgery (kind of like Miami Beach here).

Yes, you are absolutely right about Mexico. People would be very surprised at how uncommon drugs are in Colombia. There are also no car theft gangs here. Often on the street where I live there are no less than 30 military guys with machine guns and a dozen cops standing around. I am not too worried about the car getting stolen.

Insurance was 4,300,000 pesos per year. The insurance is cheap since no one steals these types of car here, never. I do not know the price of gas because I did not pay any attention when I put gas into it. But 50,000 pesos put the indicator from where the computer was asking for gas to exactly the 1/2 tank mark.

In Bogota there are driving restrictions based on the plate number at times. Where I live they only restrict motorcycles. I got a ticket for riding my scooter just a week ago since I had the wrong plate number.

Plastic surgery is too common especially in Medellin. But that being said, Colombian women are the best in Latin America. I have been all over Latin America and there is no comparison. Just think of Miami Beach without the attitude.

Escobar was pure evil. I read this book "News of a kidnapping" by the Noble Prize author Marquez. Escobar wasted allot of women and children through terrorist acts trying to avoid the U.S. Attorney from extraditing him. When it seemed like the government was going to cave in and ship Escobar out of the country he would blow up a school house or supermarket. The guy was no Robin Hood.

I have friends who were born, raised and still live in Bogota. They tell me there are sizeable and influential drug cartels operating there, possibly not in great a number as Mexico now, but nevertheless, lots of drugs and drug money flows through Colombia. Now they may keep a really low profile and drive "normal" cars and my assumption was wrong. Lord knows I've been wrong before!

They also tell me there is a small, but very wealthy upper class in Bogota who live and drive very well.

I tell you what though... if my Boxster got that much attention, I would only drive it out of town into the hills to enjoy the twisties. Sheesh!
