You always hear $2k a year and maybe one year it's only $1k but next year it's going to be 3. In 7 years I spent less than $2,000 on an '03 base that started out with 80k miles. Biggest expense was tires. But I fixed everything myself except for the alignment, which cost about $100 at the dealer. Granted, I only put 13k miles on in those 7 years but still, if I had to pay $2k a year I couldn't afford to own the car in the first place.
