Clunk when shifting
 

I get a clunk when shifting from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 over 3000 RPM when cold
The clunk happens when I depress the clutch and is from the back of the car. It does seem to be more on the right than the left and definitely in the rear

Once the car warms up , the clunk goes away or at very least a very quite clunk

I have ~ 80k on the car with the original motor mount. I looked at the CVs and all have perfect boots and no leaks. I thought it might be the motor mount, but with the problem not happening when the car is warmed up, I'm not so sure. Also there is no vibration in the car or shifter nor any movement in the shifter.

Any ideas to what the problem is?

I would still suspect the motor mount. At 80K it's got to be getting near the end of it's life.

Motor mount would be on my short list.

Ok, that's what I thought, but why does the clunk go away when the car is warmed up?

Cause rubber softens

Makes sense, as it gets warm, it softens and expands

Well, I am pretty sure the clunking was caused by the motor mount
Pulled it out this evening

I think you need a new one. ;) This one is completely gone. ;)

No wonder that you've got a clunk.

I bought the press in replacement. Hope it goes well. One of the next items for me.

Hello GTSilber,

that is pretty easy. First i use Photoshop to correct the photo – so that i can see the damage.

And there you see that the upper part of the black gum is completely tored off and broken out - means you will have contact under torque.

same here. The insert is around $30 and the full part $175+
now just need to find a place to get it pressed in today!

Best price I've found is $140 at suncoast.

Mine is past due Im sure. For me I think getting it pressed would be more hassle than the extra $110....

I considered pressing in a new bushing as well but the problem is that if you don't have quick access to a press the car would be out of commission for as long as it takes for you to find a place that is able to swap the bushing for you. So for me the extra $100 or so is worth is it because I won't have to worry about the car being in a state of disassembly while I figure out swapping the bushing.

Got the insert pressed in at a machine shop. Cost $25

Installed it back in the car and took it for a test drive.........

Smooth as silk!!! :dance:

All in all probably around 3-4 hours including jacking up the car and getting the insert pressed in. Its a reasonable easy DIY

Had I bought a new mount, I would still need the new shims. I effectively paid $60 for a new mount

How were the old shims when you took them off? Did they need to be changed or did you just change them because you had already purchased the new ones?
