CDR23 radio/CD player overheats and shuts down

Maybe someone can help me with a problem I am having.

I have a CDR23 in my 2003 Boxster (no amp or external CD player). It overheats when playing CD's and shuts down.

Thought it was the radio, so I bought a new Continental radio/single CD player.

Today it did the same thing when playing a CD, it just shutdown.

I pressed the reset button and it works again.

Now I am thinking something is wrong with the climate control or the "flaps" the divert the air to various places.

Ever heard of this problem in a Boxster?
Doesn't seem like it should get that hot in the radio compartment?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dean

Not sure, but I have the same head unit in my 03 (with amp) and it also randomly powers off when playing radio or CD's. When I purchased the car last year, the audio was basically not working, so I sent the HU and amp off to Becker in NJ for bench testing. Verdict was the amp was bad, so I bought a refurbished one. But the HU still shuts off periodically. It usually will come right back if I turn the power on. It's more of an annoyance to me as I really only listen to the flat 6 stereo most of the time, as the sound quality, even with the Bose system, is mediocre at best.

Make it three of us. My CDR 23 with Bose does the same thing. It shuts down after awhile and I turn it back on and everything is fine. I thought maybe the amp in the frunk wasn't getting air so I made sure nothing was blocking the cooling fan but it makes no difference. I can tolerate it but would be nice to fix if possible.

PS . . i don't mind the sound of the system. I have it set properly for my taste and the sound is fine . . . before it cuts out.

Check to make sure the head contacts are clean and pressing firmly in (fold down part)... this was the reason mine was cutting in the out and after I cleaned the connectors and pressed firmly IN the system was perfectly fine again. Just a thought....

Everything is tightly connected.
I really think it is the climate control unit at this point.
Might just run the a/c all the time???

One more thing I just remembered, I replaced the dash speakers with some Polk Audio DB's. I think 4" (can't recall).

I only have dash speakers.

I can't imagine they need that much more power over stock?

But I also can't say the unit shut down playing CD's before I upgraded.

Going to add an amp or put back the stock speakers this week.
Will let you know if anything helps.
